SAMPLES NEEDED
Samples to provide depend on material tested
TYPICAL TURNAROUND
2-4 day turnaround
You probably need this if
You manufacture metal lab casework and need SEFA 8-M results for a bid or specification
You changed a cabinet design, hardware, coating or supplier
You supply the paint or powder coating used on lab casework and need finish test results
What the test involves
The testing procedure for SEFA 8-M depends on the lab materials (shelves, metal finish, tables, drawers, etc.) being tested
01
Shelves and wall cabinets
Uniform loads, with shelf deflection measured against SEFA’s limit
02
Cabinet strength
Heavy load on the cabinet top (2,000 lb), a concentrated load, and a 24-hour twisting (torsion) test
03
Tables and mobile cabinets
Static load and racking tests for tables, and stability and threshold-rolling tests for mobile cabinets
04
Doors
A load on the open door, an impact on the closed door, and 100,000 open-and-close cycles
05
Drawers
Load, pull, impact and rolling-load tests, plus 50,000 cycles under a full load
06
Finish
A 49-chemical spot test, hot water, impact, paint adhesion and pencil hardness
Common questions
What is SEFA 8-M?
It’s SEFA’s laboratory grade metal casework standard. It sets the structural, durability and finish performance that metal lab cabinets, tables and shelving must meet. The current edition is SEFA 8-M-2026.
What’s the difference between SEFA 8-M and the other SEFA 8 standards?
The SEFA 8 series is split by material: 8-M for metal, 8-W for wood, 8-PH for phenolic, 8-PL for plastic laminate and 8-P for polypropylene. Each sets tests and pass levels suited to its material. Call us about testing to the other SEFA 8 standards.
Does SEFA 8 testing have to be done by an approved lab?
Yes. The standard requires testing to be performed and documented by a SEFA-approved third-party lab. Gaynes Labs is on SEFA’s approved list for SEFA 3, 7, 8 and 10.
Not certain SEFA 8 is the right test?
Send us an email, give us a call, or schedule time to chat. We can answer your questions and let you know which standard applies for your situation.
