SEFA 3 Testing for Laboratory Work Surfaces

SEFA 3 Testing for Laboratory Work Surfaces

SEFA 3 is the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association’s standard for laboratory work surfaces and sinks. Its core test exposes a surface to 49 common laboratory chemicals for 24 hours and rates how well it holds up. SEFA requires this testing to be performed and documented by a SEFA-approved third-party lab. Gaynes is one of them.

You manufacture or fabricate lab countertops or sinks and need SEFA 3 test results

You’re launching a new surface material or color

What the test involves

01

Chemical exposure

Surface samples are exposed for 24 hours to 49 reagents, including acids, bases, solvents and salts. Volatile chemicals are held against the surface under an inverted container, and the rest are applied as drops under a watch glass

02

Cleaning and rating

Each spot is cleaned and rated from 0 (no effect) to 3 (an objectionable change in appearance)

03

Reporting

Results are documented on the SEFA 3 test submittal form

Common questions

What is SEFA 3?

It’s the laboratory work surfaces standard published by the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association. It sets the performance criteria for lab countertops and sinks, with chemical and stain resistance as the central test.

What does it take to pass SEFA 3?

Each of the 49 chemical spots is rated from 0 to 3. A laboratory grade work surface can have no more than four ratings of 3.

Does SEFA 3 testing have to be done by an approved lab?

Yes. The standard requires testing to be performed and documented by a SEFA-approved third-party lab. Gaynes Labs is on SEFA’s approved list for SEFA 3, 7, 8 and 10.

Not certain SEFA 3 is the right test?
