Common questions
Do sharps mailback containers need USPS approval?
Yes. Only container systems authorized by USPS headquarters can be mailed. The vendor of the complete system applies to USPS for authorization and includes the test data. Each authorized container carries a USPS authorization number on its label.
What’s the difference between USPS mailback testing and UN certification?
UN certification qualifies hazardous materials packaging under DOT rules (49 CFR Part 178) for shipping by truck, air or sea, and certified packaging carries a UN mark. USPS mailback authorization allows a sharps or medical waste container system to be sent through the mail, and approved containers carry a USPS authorization number. Some of the tests overlap, but one approval does not replace the other.
