What is the difference between random vibration, repetitive shock, and resonant frequency vibration testing?

Gaynes has the vibration tables and capabilities to offer a variety of vibration test types that simulate different real-world vibration environments that products and packaging encounter during transportation and distribution.

Random vibration testing exposes a package or product to simultaneous vibration across a broad spectrum of frequencies, replicating the complex, unpredictable vibration profile of a truck, rail car, or aircraft in transit. It is the most commonly required test method in ISTA and ASTM distribution testing programs because it most accurately reflects what packages experience over long-haul shipping.

Repetitive shock vibration simulates the rhythmic, low-frequency bouncing a package experiences on a conveyor or in the bed of a vehicle travelling over rough surfaces. It is particularly effective at identifying resonant weaknesses in packaging structures under sustained mechanical stress.

Resonant frequency vibration testing identifies the specific frequencies at which a product or package amplifies rather than absorbs vibration energy, which is critical information for packaging engineers designing cushioning and suspension systems for fragile or sensitive products.

What standards require vibration testing for packaging and products?

Vibration testing is required or referenced across a wide range of packaging validation and product qualification standards.

ISTA 1A, 1G, 2A, 3A, 3B, and 3E all include vibration as a required test element. Amazon's ISTA-6 series certification program also requires vibration testing as part of its parcel delivery simulation.

ASTM D4169, the primary distribution simulation standard for medical device packaging, includes multiple vibration schedules covering vehicle vibration, stacked vibration, and loose load vibration depending on the distribution cycle selected.
