Amazon recently announced a revision to the ISTA 6-Amazon.com Overbox test procedure, which is the standard used for Prep Free Packaging (PFP) certification, and starting August 1, 2026 all new PFP enrollments must use the updated procedure.
Here's what changed, what it means for your business, and what you need to do next.
What Is Prep Free Packaging?
Prep Free Packaging (PFP) is one of Amazon's packaging certification tiers under the SIPP (Ships in Product Packaging) program. When an ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) is PFP certified, it means Amazon has verified that the product can ship in an Amazon Overbox without requiring additional prep work like bubble wrap, poly bagging, or other protective measures.
PFP certification uses the ISTA 6-Amazon.com Overbox test procedure to simulate the conditions a product experiences when it moves through Amazon’s fulfillment network.
What Changed in the 2026 ISTA 6-Amazon Overbox Update
Amazon updated the test procedure to reflect how its fulfillment network actually operates today. The biggest changes include:
Dunnage Materials: Air pillows have been removed from the test and replaced with paper dunnage. The procedure also recommends the use of paper tape. This aligns with Amazon’s previously announced removal of air pillows from product packaging and shift away from plastic dunnage
Test Hazard Parameters: The sizes, weights, and item pairings used during testing have been revised. These changes better reflect real-world shipment conditions, including multi-item orders
Overbox Sizes: The dimensions of the overboxes used in testing have been revised to match current packaging trends within Amazon’s network.
Sample Quantities: The number of test samples required has changed. Labs and vendors should review the updated procedure for the specific quantities now required.
Why Did Amazon Make These Changes?
The goal is straightforward: ensure that PFP certification reflects how packages are actually handled today.
Amazon’s fulfillment network and customer ordering behavior is constantly evolving. There are more multi-item shipments, improvements in sustainability (including the removal of plastic air pillows), and operational changes that affect how packages perform in transit.
The Transition Timeline
On August 1, 2026, all new PFP enrollments must use the updated ISTA-6 Amazon.com Overbox test procedure.
Before this date, there is a transition period to help vendors and labs adjust. During this window, both the 2018 and 2026 versions of the test will be accepted for PFP enrollment.
If your products / ASINs are currently PFP certified and in good standing, they will remain certified. However, ASINs can be decertified for high damage rates, concessions, safety escalations, or non-compliant packaging. Therefore, maintaining packaging quality remains important regardless of which test version was used for initial certification.
What Should Vendors Do Now?
Review the updated procedure: The updated 2026 version is now available on ISTA's website, and Amazon has updated its packaging website with revised test report templates, examples, and guidelines.
Talk to your packaging team or packaging supplier: Evaluate your current and upcoming packaging designs to ensure that they will be in line with the updated test standards
Talk to your testing lab: Ensure that the lab that you are working with is running the 2026 procedure.
Plan Your Testing: If you have products or packages that need to be certified ahead of the August 1st deadline, plan your test timeline in advance.
Consider Proactive Retesting: If you have products that were certified under the 2018 procedure and you've experienced damage issues, the updated test may reveal packaging improvements that could help.
How This Fits With Other Amazon Packaging Programs
This update applies specifically to Prep Free Packaging (PFP).
Amazon’s other certification programs, including Frustration Free Packaging (FFP), Ships in Own Container (SIOC), and Ships in Own Bag (SIOB), continue using their current published test procedures.
If you’re working across multiple programs, make sure you’re aligning each ASIN with the correct testing standard.
FAQ: Amazon PFP Test Changes (2026)
Q: Do I need to retest existing PFP-certified ASINs?
A: No, as long as they remain in good standing. However, high damage rates can still lead to decertification.
Q: Can I still use the 2018 test procedure?
A: Yes, but only during the transition period. After August 1, 2026, all new enrollments must use the updated version.
Q: Will the new test be harder to pass?
A: It depends. This change is likely to affect products that are sensitive to cushioning changes or item pairing conditions.
Q: How long does Amazon packaging testing take?
A: Timelines vary. Some labs are able to conduct testing in a matter of days and others taking multiple weeks. Reach out to your testing lab to confirm the turnaround times.
